The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in preparation for the busy holiday travel season, reminds pet owners of the correct way to go through security with their animal. It seems that there have been several instances in recent months where people have not removed pets from carriers, and instead put them through the X-ray machine at security checkpoints. TSA stated that X ray machines were not meant for animals.
The TSA officer discovered the cat after the bag had been passed through an X ray unit. The TSA released a statement that offered helpful tips to ease the stress of traveling with pets.
Remove the pet from the carrier just prior to the beginning of the screening process.
Never place a pet in the X-ray tunnel. The X-ray machine at the security checkpoint only screens carry-on bags and personal items. The owner can also walk the pet through the screening process with the pet leashed. It is best to follow the instructions of a TSA agent. The re-composure area is away from the security checkpoint and allows for the safety of both the pet and other passengers.
‘There is no reasonable excuse’ for TSA incident
Every airport and airline has their own pet policy, so anyone planning to travel with pets should research this before they leave.
