In his first interview after he was acquitted in an historic impeachment case over the weekend, Texas Attorney-General Ken Paxton (R), lashed out against the Biden Administration and the Lone Star State House Speaker Dade Phelan’s (R) impeachment proceedings and trial. Tucker Carlson, a commentator on platform X, asked Paxton: “So you believe that the Biden Administration was behind the attempt to remove you from your office?” Paxton added that he believes “that’s the place it was instigated.”
Paxton was suspended from his position after the Texas House voted against impeaching him earlier this year. A jury of state Senators acquitted him over the weekend of all 16 articles of impeachment.
Paxton, along with his allies, have criticized the proceedings for being politically motivated. In a statement after the verdict, he bashed the “sham impeachment” and “the weaponization of the impeachment process to settle political differences.”
The attorney general has also taken aim at Republican Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, and told Carlson that the lawmaker is “controlled by the Democrats.”
“I don’t think he particularly has an ideology. He says, “I want to remain in power.” Paxton accused Phelan of having made a deal with Democrats to become Speaker. Phelan, despite criticism from other Paxton supporters of the Texas House over the impeachment process, has stood behind the effort. The Speaker of the Texas House said that the impeachment resulted in the Texas AG’s office being returned to an individual “who, I believe clearly abused his powers, compromised his agency, and its employees and moved mountains to benefit and protect himself”.
