of NPR says that Democrats have a “tremendous” amount of power over McCarthy. They could get rid of him if they voted en masse along with five additional Republicans. The question now is if he needs Democrats to survive, what do they want in return?
- Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman is also under fire following the spending bill vote. Republicans claim he deliberately triggered a fire alarm at the Capitol to delay the voting. Bowman claims it was an error. Former president Donald Trump will appear before a New York court for the beginning of his civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney-General Letitia James. Trump faces a fine of $250 million if convicted for lying about the value of his properties. Judge Arthur Engoron issued a decision ordering Trump and son to sell large portions of their company. Andrea Bernstein of NPR reports that the judge’s decision addresses one cause of action from AG James’ complaint. Trump faces six more claims, including accusations of drafting false documents, conspiring, and lying to insurers. This is just one of the four lawsuits that Trump has in New York. This is where his civil and criminal cases stand. Today, the Supreme Court begins a new session. Guns, abortion and partisan redistricting are all on the agenda. The case will decide how easy it is for Americans to obtain mifepristone, the pill responsible for more than 50% of U.S. abortions. Here are some of the most important cases that the Supreme Court will be considering this term.

.Sargassum algae levels in the Caribbean Sea
have been ballooning since 2011. It can provide a great habitat for marine animals in the open ocean. Seaweed Generation, a U.K.-based startup, believes it has a solution: AlgaRay, a robot that can drag sargassum into the open ocean and sink it. California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed
Laphonza Butler, a long-time Democratic advisor and labor leader who was a former senator Dianne Feinstein’s adviser. Butler will become the second openly gay person and third Black woman to serve as a senator in the U.S. Senate. (via KQED).
